Gait Course

ESMAC Gait Course, Odense, 14 - 16 September 2020

Clinical Gait Analysis provides the essential information about abnormal movement which is necessary for a multidisciplinary team to identify and deliver the optimal management of their patients. One of the barriers to gait analysis is that it is highly multidisciplinary and this can make it challenging for specialists who have to step out of their comfort zones. If you are new to gait analysis then help is at hand, all of us started in your position!

Teaching faculty

The annual 3-day ESMAC Gait Course has been designed with the European gait analyst in mind. A group of experienced specialists with backgrounds in biomechanics, engineering, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, etc. deliver a structured series of lectures, interactive sessions and small-group practicals followed by complete clinical case presentations.

Content covered

We take you from simple to the most complex in three days! For those who feel behind in some areas, we provide comprehensive prior reading material including an online lecture. During the course you will be introduced to the neuro-musculo-skeletal requirements of gait, development of normal gait from children to old age, fundamentals of mechanics as applied to the human body, mobile apps for running small experiments in the interactive lectures, and clinical uses of 3D motion capture technology. 

On the second day you will be introduced to the components of a typical gait analysis (physical examination, video, kinematics, kinetics and electromyography). In hands-on small-group practicals you will be exposed not only to the important advantages of objective measurements but also how simple mistakes can be spotted and avoided. You will hone your skills in marker placement and model building, EMG electrode placement, physical examination, troubleshooting of gait data and even made aware of practical issues with setting up your gait lab. 

After discussing the importance of data interpretation and integration, the third day is mainly covered by case presentations of patients who had been through gait analysis. You will receive electronic notes of the content covered but to get the most out of the learning experience, remember to take notes. I still have my annotated ESMAC gait course notes going back to 1997.

Dive in!

You will gain more and more independence during the three days while the teachers turn into your facilitators. We continuously improve the content, structure and delivery of the course based on the ever changing scientific and applied developments in gait analysis and importantly based on feedback we receive every year from course participants. Come prepared (background reading and video), stay focused for three days, engage with others and ask lots of questions. Clearly, three days are only enough to get you going but at the end of the gait course you will have a solid understanding and strong skills to continue your journey on the road of gait analysis.
